Retention Treatment (Retainers)

Orthodontic treatment does not end when the teeth reach the right position. Until the teeth settle in their new position, they may tend to move back. Retention (retainer) treatment is the phase that protects the result achieved, and it is as important a part of treatment as the active treatment itself.

Why is retention necessary?

The gum fibres and bone around the teeth adapt to the new position over time. During this period the teeth need support to stay in place. Without retention, the teeth may shift again.

Types of retainer

We use two types of retention at our clinic and recommend both together for most patients:

Fixed retainer: A thin wire is bonded to the inner surface of the teeth. It is invisible, does not affect daily life and provides constant protection.

Removable retainer (Essix): A clear, custom-made aligner that can be taken in and out. It is usually worn at night. Essix retainers wear out or change shape over time, so the retainer is renewed and the patient receives a new one at regular intervals.

When should my Essix retainer be replaced?

It should be replaced when it is worn, cracked or no longer fits properly. Because your digital records are kept at our clinic, a new retainer can be made without taking a new impression. We check your retainer together at your check-up.

Use and care

Wear the retainer only for the recommended times. Protect it from hot water and hard brushing, and clean it regularly. Keep it in its case when not in use. If you have a fixed retainer, floss and interdental brushes are important; we will show you how to use them.

What if there is a problem with my retainer?

If the fixed wire comes loose, the retainer cracks or it does not fit, contact us without waiting for your appointment. Problems are easily solved when addressed early.

Patients who finished treatment elsewhere

Patients who completed their treatment at another clinic and are having retainer problems are also welcome. We will assess your situation and decide on a suitable retention plan together.
